Girls Who Build Today Will Shape the Green Workforce of Tomorrow: Eco Homes Club 2026

This year, 140 girls from 14 primary schools across Cornwall became designers, engineers and problem-solvers as they created their own eco homes.

Throughout the programme, they explored how technology can help us live more sustainably, from programming micro and designing smart home features to experimenting with sensors and automation.

Along the way, they met women working in Cornwall’s technology and engineering industries, helping them see the real people behind these careers and understand where their own skills could take them.

The future is green

The results from our Eco Homes Club Impact Report show the difference that early experiences can make.

During the programme:

Awareness of green technology and engineering careers increased from 41% to 95%.
63% of girls finished the programme describing themselves as good at building and making things with another 31% saying “I’m getting there”
89% felt part of a group of girls who are into the same things as they are

And the impact went beyond the girls taking part.

Teachers told us that the programme helped build their confidence delivering technology activities, strengthened links between classroom learning and future careers, and encouraged girls to engage more with problem-solving and making.

Early experiences matter for girls in Cornwall

For Cornwall, creating these opportunities is more important than ever.

As industries including technology, engineering and clean energy continue to grow, employers need a future workforce with the skills and confidence to shape what comes next.

However, many young people still face barriers when it comes to discovering these careers. Rural communities can have fewer opportunities to connect with industry, and without visible role models it can be difficult for children to picture themselves in roles they have never seen.

By giving girls the chance to build, code and meet women working in these industries, we can help make future careers feel more achievable from an early age.
