To meet this ambitious goal, we must ensure that young people of all genders recognise engineering as the exciting, creative, and collaborative career it truly is.
Yet in Cornwall, fewer than 2% of girls currently express interest in a future in engineering. This is a disappointing figure that highlights the urgent need to engage, inspire, and open doors for young women to see what’s possible.
The good news? Over 19% of girls in Cornwall say they would like to learn more about engineering and that’s a powerful opportunity!
One of the most effective ways to ignite this interest is by showcasing real-life role models who reflect the diversity and richness of the engineering profession. That’s why International Women in Engineering Day is so important. We love seeing our social feeds filled with stories of inspiring women engineers from around the globe.
This year, TECgirls is thrilled to be part of the celebration. At the upcoming Reach for the Sky Festival on 5th of July, we’re hosting an Amazing Engineering Panel featuring some incredible women whose stories show just how varied and fulfilling a career in engineering can be.
Meet the Engineers!
Jessica Sanchez - Product Support Engineer, Leonardo Helicopters
Jessica is in her second year at Leonardo after earning her Aerospace Engineering degree at Queen Mary University of London. Now based in Yeovil, Somerset, she’s a passionate advocate for women in engineering, actively participating in STEM events and leading initiatives like the AeroWomen Conference. She recently represented young engineers in Parliament, sharing her journey into the defence industry.
Leona Ferrand - Electrical Technical Apprentice, Leonardo Helicopters
Leona’s path into engineering wasn’t straightforward. After studying accounting at university, she realised her passion lay elsewhere and made the bold decision to apply for an apprenticeship in engineering. Moving 365 miles from home, she’s now thriving in her third year at Leonardo, proving it’s never too late to follow your true calling.
Krystina Pearson‑Rampeearee - Aerospace Engineer, Entrepreneur, and STEM Advocate
Krystina has over 12 years experience in the aviation industry and now works at BAE Systems while running AviateHer, a business that promotes diversity in STEM. She’s an active mentor and Women’s Engineering Society ambassador, with numerous awards to her name, including Top 50 Women in Engineering and STEM Trailblazer.
Ruth Amos - Inventor, Engineer, and YouTube Creator
Ruth made national headlines at 16 with her award-winning StairSteady invention. Since then, she’s founded multiple ventures including the wildly popular YouTube channel Kids Invent Stuff. Through her videos, public speaking, and hands-on STEM outreach, Ruth empowers young people, especially girls, to be curious, creative, and confident in engineering.
At TECgirls, we believe that the spark of inspiration can lead to a lifetime of innovation. By sharing these incredible stories online and in person, we aim to show girls across Cornwall that engineering isn't just for someone else, it can be for them too.
Join us on the 5th of July at the Reach for the Sky Festival for more inspiring stories, hands-on activities, and the chance to meet real engineers who are changing the world.
