Phones are no longer just phones. They are gaming devices, WhatsApp groups, social media platforms, image editors, meme makers, video creators, and even AI companions.
They are the whole of the internet in our children’s hands.
But before panic sets in, it’s worth remembering that phones are also ways to stay connected with friends and family, maps for getting around safely, cameras for capturing memories, tools for homework and online learning, and a lifeline when help is needed.
In a modern age where most households no longer rely on landlines and many homes don’t have desktop computers, children will likely need a phone at some point. That doesn’t mean unlimited access is necessary. It’s important to have conversations and set agreements about how a child will use a phone, what safety measures are in place, and what steps to take if problems arise.
That’s why we created the First Phones Family Workshop. At first, we planned it just for parents; a space to speak candidly about phones and share practical tips. But as we developed the course, we realised the most important part of
supporting a child with their first phone is building trust. So we adapted both the format and content to help families have meaningful conversations about getting a phone, using it responsibly, and staying safe online.
On Saturday, 28th February at Truro High School, TECgirls will host this free workshop for all Cornwall residents. Families will work together to explore:
Why a phone might be needed and how to choose the right one
What parental controls are, how they work, and why they matter
Whether “free” games and apps are really safe
How to have critical, age-appropriate conversations about social media and AI
What to do when things go wrong online
How to create a clear and supportive family digital devices agreement
While these can be challenging topics, TECgirls are experts in engaging young people on technology, AI, and online safety. Our events are designed to be informative, yet inspiring and positive. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions, and we focus on keeping the atmosphere friendly and conversational.
The session will be led by Caitlin Gould, Founder of TECgirls. Caitlin speaks nationally on the impact of AI on education and children. She recently ran a successful AI in Education event for teachers in Cornwall and has been invited to participate in an AI Symposium in Tokyo, representing the UK with the Royal Academy of Engineering. She is passionate about helping young people access technology safely so they can feel empowered and thrive in an increasingly digital world. As a parent of three children, she also understands the concerns of parents who want to help but are unsure where to start.
While we do mainly work with girls, this event is aimed at EVERYONE.
We look forward to seeing you there!
