Job title:
Degree Rotorcraft Apprentice at Leonardo Helicopters
Location:
Yeovil

What inspired you to go into engineering?
I distinctly remember getting some homework when I was in year 1 which was about watching and recording the phases of the moon, from that age I was then obsessed with space and this led me to discover the aerospace industry. I really enjoyed the problem solving aspects of STEM subjects and how they weren't always so straight forward to me to get my head round - I love a challenge! This led me to looking at engineering roles!
What do you love about your job?
That there are always opportunities to learn and that is heavily supported by the people around me.
How did you get your job?
I applied to my apprenticeship in a similar way as a job, using a CV and cover letter. I was then pushed through to the assessment stages and interview stages.
What advice would you give to a young person looking to start a career in your industry?
Always ask questions. You hear 'no question is ever a silly question' a lot and it took me a while to understand that also but everyone around you wants to help you learn and succeed. And the best way to learn is to ask plenty of questions to make sure you understand!
What do you think will be the most exciting developments in your industry over the next 5-10 years?
Seeing how growing technology such as AI adapts and enhances the products and our ways of working!
Why would you encourage more girls to pursue a career like yours?
It is a male-dominated industry, but in the 5 years I have been in the industry I am starting to see more girls and women entering the industry. It is a space for everyone, its time to break those old stereotype barriers and bring our ideas and skills to the table!
